Day of the Dead altars play a very significant role in overall Day of the Dead celebrations. The drapes used on the background of the pyramidal altars are black, purple, or white in color. Different types of fruits decorate the cross and are intertwined with cempasuchitl flowers, wreath-shaped bread, and coconuts. It can also feature offerings to the dead. In front of the altar there is an arch made of two banana plants that almost creates a small room due to their size. It will typically be colorful and decorative in nature. I secured 1 1/4 inch hooks to the ceiling to hang my arch. The key is to make it look like it’s a floating art installation. Hanging decor from the ceiling, ALWAYS makes things look a little fancy. These straps were perfect for keeping my arch taught and they can be reused for future projects or cable organization. The arch of an altar represents the passage between death and the living world. When building my ofrenda (altar), it was important to do a little damage to my recently painted walls, after all this is a temporary setup. Nearby, some men were erecting a twenty-foot flower arch. This year, I got to celebrate in partnership with The Home Depot. of graves and the need for people to express their sorrow through the Day of the Dead.
